trouble in starting VNL
« on: March 12, 2011, 13:44 »
Dear all,

I have installed ATK 11.2 combined with VNL, and loaded a trial license for OPENSUSE 11.3 Linux x64 system. I have found that it is ok for atk command-line mode, but when I want to use the graphical interface, VNL cannot be started. It does not give any error information either, just no response.

So what is the problem? Is it necessary to activate the ATI graphical card in our workstation, instead of using the default one of the system, to run VNL?

Thanks.

Try starting VNL from the command line, rather than using the desktop icon. This would allow any error messages to be printed to the terminal, for troubleshooting.

So, open a terminal window and type "vnl" instead of "atkpython", and let's see what happens.

Hi Anders,

I have tried type vnl in the command line, and it is shown like followed:

z400workstation@160-218:~/QuantumWise/atk-11.2.0/vnl/bin> vnl

_IceTransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host linux-uflo
_IceTransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host linux-uflo
Qt: Session management error: Could not open network socket
/home/z400workstation/QuantumWise/atk-11.2.0/vnl/bin/vnl: line 3: 13450 Segmentation fault      VNL_PATH=$EXEC_DIR/../.. PSEUDOPOTENTIALS_PATH=$EXEC_DIR/../../atkpython/share/pseudopotentials PYTHONHOME=$EXEC_DIR/.. PYTHONPATH= LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$EXEC_DIR/../lib $EXEC_DIR/vnl_exec $*

So what does it mean.....

Thanks!

Perhaps you are trying to run VNL on a remote host? You should always run it locally (on the machine you are sitting at).

??? Actually I am running on the workstation where ATK&VNL are installed
I have followed all the steps in the installation guide. It is quite strange that ATK command line mode can be used but VNL cannot....

Do you have an older installation of ATK installed on the machine`?

Yes...Actually there are 3 versions of ATK on that machine..... 08.10, 10.8 and 11.2
Do I have to delete the old versions..?

I take it the other VNLs worked before? Do they still work (go to each one and locally run "./vnl" in the respective vnl/bin directory)?

Which Linux distribution? Problems have been reported for Mandriva on this (not with VNL, but Firefox and OpenOffice), but it's not a specific error for Mandriva, just something that went wrong in an update, apparently... Might give us some hints how to troubleshoot, but this can be a tricky error, related to anything from the /etc/hosts file to user IDs and firewalls (judging from an ultraquick Google search).

The system in our machine is OPENSUSE 11.3 X64.
The previous version of VNL (10.8) cannot work on our machine either. But that may be due to graphical card reason because the ATI graphical card is not activated on the machine....
VNL 08.10 can be used in the machine.

But you have an motherboard graphics card activated at least? Otherwise there is no hope - and no point - in running VNL :)

Yes, the motherboard graphical card is activated. It is said that VNL 10.8 cannot start without a external graphical card but VNL 11.2 has removed the bug...right?

The change from 10.8 to 11.2 is not related to hardware but software drivers, but yes, the new version should be better at handling onboard graphics. The error you are seeing is however most likely not at all related to the graphics, instead it seems network-related.

There are some interesting suggestions here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/986964/qt-session-management-error. They could be helpful in resolving this. Also, check your /etc/hosts in relation to this post: http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?/topic/94953-browsers/
