The one dimensional system has several varieties, i.e., atomic chain, nanowire, or nanotube. I think you can find a couple of examples for last two cases.

This two tutorials are based on the older version of ATK. But you can follow the steps listed there to construct the atomic chain of Nickel.

If you follow some other tutorials and learn the basics of the Builder etc, then after that it's really simple, you just place the single metal atom in a box, and repeat in Z.
