questions about fermi energy

Deer all,
I want to know the definition of fermi energy (Ef) in calculation,  are the calculation of Ef for all material  the same?  How can I compare the energy in different figures of densty of states if the original points are differnt material's Ef?

Please read a textbook on Solid State Physics, e.g.,  the one by Ashcroft & Mermin, see https://books.google.dk/books/about/Solid_State_Physics.html?id=1C9HAQAAIAAJ&redir_esc=y, or google the definition of the Fermi energy or related chemical potential.
